Hotel L'Union, Salvan, Valais.

Ok, I know..it's not a mountain hut, but for 70 swiss francs for a double room with a wash basin and breakfast it's price is pretty close to a cabane!

Salvan is a sleepy (very sleepy) village on the train line from Martigny to Chamonix. It's a good start point for various hikes either in the direction of Dents du Midi, Lake Emosson or Col de la Forclaz.

The hotel staff are very friendly and welcoming. It isn't much visited, but the place which is in a time warp (the wallpaper and decoration really don't seem to have changed for decades) is very good value for money (large meal portions and breakfast) and hence recommended.

Warning: the toilet and bathroom is a bit far from the bedrooms!
