Berghotel Schwarenbach - 033 675 12 72

One winter morning my wife and i decided to chance our arm and see whether we could walk over the famous Gemmi Pass separating Canton Valais from the Bernese Oberland. A description of the hike can be found here.

Though we did not have snow shoes, or poles, we were lucky to have a crisp, sunny winter's day. We took the vertiginous cable car up from Leukerbad to the pass and found ourselves at the start of a well-packed snow track which we followed downhill.

Half way we reached the historical Berghotel (mountain hotel) - originally built as a customs house in 1742. Here we had lunch and took in the awesome surroundings before heading on to Kandersteg. At end of our roughly 4 hour walk we took the cable car down from Sunnbüel to Kandersteg.

Check the weather before setting out on this hike as the cable cars or the paths are likely to be closed.

For timings of the cable car down to Kandersteg (Sunnbüel-Kandersteg) click here or call 033 675 8141.

If you are walking in the other direction ie. from Kandersteg to Leukerbad the timings for the cable car down to Leukerbad can be found here or you can call 027 470 1839.
